Dear Jim,
As our brains turn to mush in the daily 110-plus degree
temperatures of a late summer in the desert, we at Four
Peaks find it important to put our thinking caps on
and fight against the slow but persistent mental
degradation we suffer here in Phoenix this time of year.
(Run-on sentences are symptomatic, so please forgive.)
The above quote from Ben Franklin will set the
philosophical tone of your Brewsletter No. 5. Think
about it: at Four Peaks, good drinking is the very
foundation of good living. When the brewery was but a
distant dream, the proprietors would spend countless
hours in deep contemplation as to the potential
existence of a universal source of a sense of good living
for all
people -- men, women and children included. Their final
hypothesis was that good beer would probably make
people feel as though they are living "good" on a grand
and universal scale. The
brewery was quickly developed as a laboratory (albeit a
stylish and comfy one) to test this hypothesis. 100
percent of the results continue to affirm their
hypothesis, leading them to ol' Ben's lasting and now
well-accepted conclusion: good drinking IS good living.
| Made in the Shade Beer Fest Coming Up |
 |
The 11th Annual Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival
will take place Saturday, August 9th, from 3 p.m. to 7
p.m. The best thing about this festival: it's a fun
fundraising event. The next-best thing about this
festival: it's held in Flagstaff at the Coconino County
Fairgrounds at Fort Tuthill Park. Just when the Phoenix
heat starts making you hallucinate, this beer fest gives
you the perfect excuse for escaping to the cool north of
this great hot state.
Over 65 breweries will bring more than 250 microbrews
for you to try while listening to live entertainment under
the pines. Food vendors will have lots of grub for sale
as well. Tickets are $25 advance, $30 at the door. You
can buy them at Four Peaks, Papago Brewing, Tops, Sun
Devil Liquors and Homebrew Depot in Phoenix. They're
also available at a number of other locations in Flag --
Beaver Street Brewery, Flag Brewing, Homebrewer's
Outpost, Mogollon Brewing and the Wine Loft. You can
purchase special VIP tickets from the website, www.
azbeer.com.
The Sun Sounds Foundation, the event's producer,
anticipates around 3,500 attendees this year -- all must
be 21 or older, so keep that in mind.
The Sun Sounds Foundation is a nonprofit organization.
Through the Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival,
the foundation works to benefit Sun Sounds of Arizona -
- an organization that provides readings of newspapers
and other print information to the blind, visually
impaired, physically challenged and learning disabled.

| A word or two more about the beer fest |
 |
If you go to the Made in the Shade Beer Tasting
Festival, we strongly suggest you make arrangements to
stay in Flag for the night. Chances are, you won't want
to leave -- and probably shouldn't leave -- until the next
morning.
Even though the fest ends at 7 p.m. (last pour is 6:30
p.m.), the night just begins. A huge party usually erupts
at Flagstaff Brewing afterward, and it's a good time to
explore all the other cool, quirky independent bars and
clubs lining the streets of Flag. By the end of the night,
everyone is stumbling down the streets arm-in-arm
singing sailor songs. Definitely worth sticking around
for.
Another thing: though there is a really good chance that
public drunkenness (yours or someone else's) will be
something you can't really avoid, there are some
behaviors that will not be tolerated. (We know this from
experience.)
Try to avoid slamming into people, spilling beer on
people who aren't your friends, and -- this one's a
kicker -- offering a police officer a swig from your
mobile bar unit, which you're obviously drinking from as
well. Oh, and don't drive. Anything.

While the rest of you have been taking vacations and
drinking way too much on a Tuesday night, we've been
toiling away, working to improve all aspects of our
business. We want you to know we appreciate all the
senses -- not just taste and smell -- so we've (well, our
designer has) come up with a beautiful new logo for the

flavor and medium body, you can now gaze lovingly at
our comely new logo -- look for it everywhere Four

| Red, White and Brew: Something for Everyone |
 |
|
East Mesa has a way to go before it becomes a hot spot
for foodies and beer geeks like us. The addition of Red,
White and Brew in February of last year, however, was
a step in the right direction.
Mark Nowicki, Guido Russo and Ron Siegel opened the
restaurant that features "bold American dining" because
they wanted options. Not only were they tired of the
same old franchises surrounding their neighborhoods,
they were interested in owning a restaurant that offered
different types of foods, wines and beers to please the
palates of everyone. Nowicki, a parent himself, said he
really wanted the place to cater toward families and
children and to offer "a little bit of everything."
Red, White and Brew does offer a little bit of
everything -- and does so very well. The lunch and
dinner crowds pile into the
spacious restaurant to sample delicious steak salads,
brick oven pizzas and the extremely popular Mussels
Vin Blanc. Other creative menu notables include the
Stuffed Eggplant Florentine with Linguine and the Shrimp
Monaco -- jumbo shrimp sauteed in a lemon wine sauce
with mushrooms and served on a bed of garlic leaf
spinach, smothered in mozzarella cheese. Kids will love
the individual pizzas and the yummy stuffed pizza rolls.
R, W and B also offers 11 beers on tap (Kiltlifter and
Four Peaks Hefe-Weizen among them) and 26 in the
bottle. The wine list is impressive as well -- a feature
Nowicki really worked to develop. The staff is also
super friendly, the atmosphere nice and calm. We feel
this account of ours should not just be a stop for anyone
trekking to East Mesa sometime soon; make it a
destination for a quiet night out, or for a relaxing lunch.
The food is AMAZING, the beer nice and cold, and
chances are that not matter what you're craving, Red,
White and Brew has something for you.
